Police interactions in Canada

Hi everyone. I thought this would be a great video to teach ESL students in Canada. The police powers in Canada may be quite different from whichever country the students traveled from. Therefore, it is important to be aware should students have any police interactions.

    This is a great video, Cooper. I like this guy, I'll definitely watch a few more of his videos. I never thought about this lesson before, but it's such a good one to teach students. I find this particularly timely with the recent developments in the Marrisa Shen homicide case where the actions of the police were called into question over the collection of DNA samples from Middle Eastern men. So important for our new Canadians (and all Canadians) to know the law, their rights and how the legal system works.

    That is a good point Cooper, ESL students should also be made aware of our Guarantee of Rights and Freedoms as presented in the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms. Also, learning the ways to interact with police will take the pressure off of ESL students interacting with them. In addition, it would be helpful for ESL students to realize that the police are not there to harm them in anyway, as there are legal rights of life, liberty, and security of person along with all the other Charter Rights and Freedoms.

When the program began, I was researching online about how a teen, Tim Doner, used technology to aid his fluency and accuracy with languages with authentic exposure. For example, the teenager in the clip uses the Internet to draw elements of blended learning before engaging in conversation with others using the foreign language he acquired. In addition, he would also elicit responses for pronunciation by posting YouTube clips of himself and then gets the feedback from native speakers in the chosen foreign language. Criminal Record Checks

Great news class that I wanted to share. Linda Vanderheide, my supervisor whom you met, has confirmed that those of you with existing valid criminal record checks can use them for our practicum. In her recent email to me, she said, "  Yes, TESOL students with active Criminal Records checks can use them with our school.  However they have to use the SHARING FORM.  Here is a link: https://www2.gov.bc.ca/gov/ content/safety/crime- prevention/criminal-record- check/sharing-results So that is great news for our class.
